Do you love a warm bath at the end of a long day? You’re not alone. But did you know there’s a right way to take an Epsom salt bath if you want to truly support detox, sleep, and healing?
In this post, I’ll guide you through how to optimize your bath routine with the best soak time, ideal temperature, safe essential oil use, and even a touch of baking soda – plus I share my favorite bath recipe that helps me deeply relax and feel restored.
🌿 Why Epsom Salt?
Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate. Magnesium is a vital mineral that many people are deficient in. Soaking in a bath with Epsom salt can help with:
- Muscle recovery
- Nervous system regulation
- Sleep support
- Gentle detoxification
I mention Epsom salt throughout this post and video, but I personally use magnesium flakes (magnesium chloride) from the Zechstein Seabed. Both forms provide magnesium through the skin and support relaxation and detox—flakes may even absorb more efficiently.
- Rejuvenating Body & Foot Bath – Unlike common bath salts or epson salt, our Pure Magnesium Flakes are sourced from the Netherlands’ ancient Zechstein Seabed, one of the world’s most pristine sources 1600 meters below the sea’s surface.
- Magnesium Balance – Fast-dissolving magnesium chloride bath flakes turn any tub into a luxurious spa experience. Try them in place of a bath salt or epsom salt bath soak after a long day.
- Concentrated Crystals – One cup of our magnesium chloride flakes provides approximately 90 grams of magnesium chloride plus naturally occurring trace elements from ancient seawater.
- Magnesium Bath Soak – Perfect before bedtime or any time you need some soothing relaxation, our magnesium flakes for bath get to work quickly. Pour 1-2 cups into a warm tub to help soothe overworked muscles and joints, or try it as a foot soak.
- The Life-flo Difference – For the past 30 years, Life-flo has been committed to supporting women through every stage of change with thoughtfully crafted products made for real life. Our formulas are developed with care to help you feel confident and ready to take on each day.
⏱️ Ideal Soak Time
Keep your bath to about 20 minutes. This is the sweet spot for magnesium absorption through the skin. Soaking too long may not offer extra benefits and could even lead to mineral loss if you’re overheated or dehydrated.
🌡️ Ideal Bath Temperature
Warm is best, not hot.
Stick to 98–101°F to avoid triggering a stress response in the body. I wear an Oura ring and noticed my heart rate stays elevated when the water is too hot, affecting my sleep—even though I fall asleep fast.
✨ Using Essential Oils Safely
Essential oils can enhance your bath’s calming effects. Just be sure to dilute them before adding to the water.
Try this relaxing blend:
💧💧💧 3 drops Lavender
💧💧 2 drops Cedarwood
💧 1 drop Ylang Ylang
I use doTERRA Essential Oils, which are high quality, Certified Pure Tested Grade.

🧂 Why Add Baking Soda?
Baking soda:
- Softens the water
- Soothes irritated skin
- May help balance pH and reduce chlorine effects in tap water
Add ½ to 1 cup baking soda along with your Epsom salt.
🛁 My Relax & Reset Bath Recipe:
- 1-2 cups Epsom salt
- 1/2-1 cup baking soda
- CPTG Essential oil blend (diluted in carrier oil, castile soap, or milk)
- Warm water (98-101°F)
- Soak for 15-20 minutes
Optional: dim lights, light a candle, play relaxing music, and sip herbal tea for a full-body healing experience.
